I'm in the process of setting up a database for scanned facility drawings; many of the drawings don't seem to have all the standard title block information. Nonetheless, I was wondering if there was any particular standard for naming the files. I'm currently just sorting the files and still have a few drawers full of drawings to scan.

Thanks.

I'm not aware of any standard CAD or drawing file naming requirements, however I would come up with a clear and logical plan.

I have seen many different schemes over the years. Usually, the file name includes the drawing number and revision. Often, within aerospace organizations, there will also be a document type indicator. This indicator is usually in the form of letters, such as; PL for parts list, TR for traveler, RT for routing sheet, ICD for Interface Control Drawing, etc. Additionally, organizations may group the files by sequence, project, product, or other.

What you are doing will and can effect your organization for many years to come. The decisions made today on how these are named and organized could affect productivity, cost of storage and retrieval, as well as the companies ability to grow. I would think hard and long and hard on how you approach this organization tasks.

This is not trivial...
