Shear stability: Grease consistency may
change as it is mechanically worked or sheared between
wearing surfaces. A grease’s ability to maintain its
consistency when worked is its shear stability or mechanical
stability. A grease that softens as it is worked is called
thixotropic. Greases that harden when worked are called
rheopectic.
