Soft metal films. Many soft metals such as
lead, gold, silver, copper, and zinc, possess low shear
strengths and can be used as lubricants by depositing them
as thin films on hard substrates. Deposition methods include
electroplating, evaporating, sputtering, and ion plating.
These films are most useful for high temperature
applications up to 1000°C (1832°F) and roller bearing
applications where sliding is minimal.
