`I` beams are unstable cross-sections, so it is important to know -

1) How the ends of the beam are supported or fixed

2) Are there any incoming lateral members fixed to the top flange of the beam (aiding its stability) and what spacing are these

3) What safety factor on the yield of the material would you like to work to

4) What deflection would be acceptable at the centre of the beam (usually about Length/360)
