I am trying to design a gearbox. Basic parameters are as follows: Ratio = 90:1
A consultant has told me that, based on his stress analysis, the input worm gear should have a hardness of Rockwell C 60, and the output gear should have a hardness of Rockwell C 30. Does anyone have any suggestions on good materials to use that will have good wear properties when used together? We do not want to use beryllium copper, which we used on an earlier version (which did work well). Thanks for any suggestions. |

For the C-60 try D2, for the C30 try 4140HT. 4140HT will already be around C30. The D-2 will need to be heat treated. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |
