I have a deceptively simple deformation problem that eludes my Statics 101 experience. (Statics 201 or FEA, maybe?) I have a six-foot horizontal W6x9 I-beam, supported at both ends, with an intersecting horizontal perpendicular beam 4 inches wide seated at midspan of the I-beam, flush to the web, with the load bearing on the lower flange of the I-beam. (Which works out to approximately 6 sq. inches of bearing surface on the flange.) How much vertical (shear) load can be applied by the wood beam at the I-beam seat before the flange undergoes plastic deformation (i.e., stays bent)? |
