I took engineering (too) many years ago, so I need some help with a fairly simple question that I don't feel comfortable calculating myself. I am trying to figure out the relative strength of a channel and an H beam (with the same thicknesses, sizes, and materials) undergoing a single point beam load that is supported at both ends. Which shape would be stronger along both the x AND the y axes - the channel or the H beam? I am specifically looking at a 3/4" x 3/4" piece with a .050" thickness throughout in aluminum. I just want to know which is the better choice given that both a channel and an H beam would be the same weight. (I know they won't support a lot, so don't worry about that.) Thanks for any help you can give!
