Hi There,

I have a 14X8 shelf above garage door.

I would like to provide additional support in middle/outside edge.

My plan was to place a 165'(14 foor) L -iron across top ( on ledge of sidewalls.

Then a smaller piece of iron down to tie into shelve and support.

Any ideas as to what gage of angle iron?

What weight can it support in center of 14' span?

Shane

You've got a lot of variables here so let me start by verifying what I think your conditions are: You've got a shelf 14ft long x 8" wide supported at either end over a garage door. You plan to put a beam above the shelf sitting on the sidewalls and hang a center support from this to the shelf (14ft span with shelf load at 7ft).

Assuming this is correct, I'd first ask if there is any specific reason you are using an angle? You really should consider a symmetrical section such as rectangular structural tubing. A single angle will tend to twist on you as it gets loaded up, especially with the span you are describing.

You'll need to estimate the load you want to support. Once this is known, a proper beam can be sized. There are calculators on this page that can assist with this. If you need assistance beyond this, I'd recommend asking a local engineer who can look at your site conditions and help make proper recommendations.

Hope this helps you move forward.
