I have read other topics relating to sched 40 pipe deflection but none suffice to answer my problem. I will be attempting to hoist a 1100 lb horse in a sling to be attached to a 8 ft span sched 40 4" ID steel pipe. The horse is injured but will be slightly sedated, so abrupt movement will be minimalized.

My question is will the pipe safely support the horse and what will be the deflection at the middle?

Thank you, Chip Noe, retired

Hi and welcome to the forum. Would this type of setup work?

Wow, nice picture. My roof will not support the load, so we are modifying our horse stocks so the 4" ID pipe will span the 8" across the top. Just want to know how much deflection there will be. You must be a horseman to have that picture.

I plugged some numbers into a calculator and it looks like about and 1-1/2" of deflection. The thicker the wall the better.

I googled "Horse Sling"
