I have dealt with many hinges in sheetmetal applications. To give you the best answer, I need a bit more information.

First, is this steel? If so, is it galvannealed or galvanized? If it is, you will need to consider removing the coating prior to welding.

Second, is the part to be painted or plated? Painting a hinged part requires choosing a hinge with paint clearance or painting prior to adding the hinge.

As far as a cheap hinge is concerned, the cheapest I have found is known as "continuous hinge" and is available from hardware suppliers and sheetmetal dealers. The hinge will be the cheap part. The cost is involved in applying the hinge to the application. It is available with pre-punched holes if you desire to attach the hinge with screws or rivets or you can order the hinge without holes if you wish to use a spot welder to attach the hinge.

There are many applications for hinges: fixed, lift-off, concealed, etc. Maybe your best bet would be to contact a hinge manufacturer and let them know what you are trying to accomplish and they can guide you to the best choice for your application.

hi Ron - its steel or iron + powder coating (or enamel coating). riveting a hinge on after processing the metal sounds like best option.

part from that, please see uploaded image on imageshack here:

idea is to form SIDE & BASE edges into part of hinge, add a rod and some riveted caps to keep it fixed in place. whats your feeling? - any way to simplify this?

thanks / simon

Hi,
In your sketch, which feature guarantee the restraining of the steel rod ??

How about rounding off (folding) the edges of two plates so that eliminating the use of the plate to fasten rivets and the rivets..??
