Goodness, no! They probably meant one of two things: There is a glut of mech engineers (at least in North America) right now due to the economic conditions. For that reason, it is discouraging to some folks. Or, perhaps they said that because it's not one of the up-and-coming "cool" fields like bioengineering, or alternative fuels, or computer engineering. But heck, in all those fields there is still some mechanical aspect such as packaging, delivery systems, etc. John-Paul Belanger |

Engineers are problem solvers. If you enjoy solving problems you will enjoy engineering. Then the question becomes - what type of problems grab your attention? If you are just looking at it as "a job", then it doesn't matter what you do. But if its the kind of thing that will stick with you after work, the kind of thing that stays on your mind, then you have achieved the ultimate reward - enjoying your work. Two nights ago I solved a problem I have been wrestling with for weeks - in my sleep! Will there be a demand for your abilities and knowledge? If you are good and if you never stop learning the answer will be yes. Mechanical engineering dying out? Absolutely not. As long as we live in a physical world there will be a need for people that can solve physical problems and improve our lives in some way. I'm not saying you shouldn't be aware of market needs. I'm just saying you need to know yourself and know what you enjoy doing. |
