I am a machinist now and am looking into becoming a mechanical engineer. I have already explorer the U of Wisconsin route ( I live in Appleton), and can get a degree through the local center school. Are online classes and degrees another route I should explore? How do former machinists fair as engineers? Are there other options I am missing?

Hi and welcome to the forum...If you have a degree program locally....go for it. Some of the courses thru U of Wisconsin maybe online anyway. Machinists make great engineers...if possible focus on Manufacturing Engineering...tooling and fixtures etc. |

I became an engineer 30 years ago and have been designing machines ever since, with some success in my opinion. Everything I learned about machining principles was AFTER I graduated. I have always been very conscious of my greatest weakness in this area - a good working knowledge of every day machine shop practices. I wish I had been a machinist first. |
