We have a chassis that is 4.5" x 8.0" with an .037 +/-.001 EMI Gasket Groove around the top surface of the chassis. We have a situation where a .038 Pin Gage will fit in an isolated area where the End Mill dwelled, entered and exited. I was told that ANSI/AMSE may provide extra tolerance when 90% of a feature like this is good, you get an additional 10% on the tolerance on the remaining 10% of the feature. Is this correct? If so, can you direct to the section in the ASME standard that explains this?
Thanks, Greg |

I'm not familiar with a specific provision for this either. I do know that there is a "rule of thumb" out there that when designing physical gages there is a 10% allowance (5% of that is for wear) based on the product tolerance. Could this be what you are thinking of? Or maybe I'm way off on a different topic |

First, your tolerances and description look familiar to me - BAL EMI seal width? Spira EMI seal width? The BAL eccentric EMI seal could have challenges with this as-built groove, however I doubt it. I suspect you could non-conformance this through and ask manufacturing to look at their processes and be careful next time. As far as the width (or depth) of this groove, I'm not aware of a specific geometric tolerance that will give the tolerance variation on size as you described. You just have to increase the size tolerance to accommodate this - size ANSI/ASME standard does provide a geometric tolerance (Position) that when applied with a MMC modifier will allow additional LOCATION tolerance when the size changes towards LMC. There are other methods involving notes and statistical tolerances. What standard do you folks work to?
