Could someone help in finding an analytical answer or formulas for a proper length-diameter ratio of a piston to prevent it from binding as a function of force or pressure, piston diameter, and the clearance between the piston and cylinder bore? The piston can be either connected to a rod or to nothing. Thanks very much in advance.

You may need to requalify your request. The positioning of the wrist pin in a piston has a great bearing on how the piston loads against the cylinder wall. If the piston is not connected to a connecting rod, it will not realize these loads.

Nowhere near enough information provided. Is the rod moving in a straight line or is it like a connecting rod and crankshaft?

Is the piston driving the rod or the rod driving the piston?

Do some research on motorcycle pistons for one of the shortest skirt length to diameter applications around.
