what are the methods of attaching gears to shafts

My favorite method is duct tape and Elmer's glue. Just kidding... humor.

Most of the time gears are keyed to the shafts they're driven by. They can be installed with a shrink or press fit. Sometimes the shafts and gears are splined, especially if they need to move on the shaft. Shoulders on the shafts and/or snap rings can be used to hold them in place. Set screws over the keys can sometimes be used keep a gear in place depending on the type and service it's in.

Depends on what the situation calls for...?
