I was asked the question by one of our fellow engineers why 5" diameter and 2 1/2" diameter pipe sizes are not commonly used? I would appreciate a good technical answer please from the experts. |

You're saying that those two sizes aren't commonly used based on what? The only reason I can figure why a person would bump up to 3" or down to 2" if 2-1/2" would best suit their specific application, would be availability. If those two sizes... 2-1/2" & 5" aren't readily available from suppliers then I'd guess they aren't producing those sizes because there isn't much demand for them. So then your co-workers question would be valid. If that were indeed the case then I'd suppose that it's a fluke that most application requirements around the country fall on either side of those two sizes? First thing I'd want to find out to answer your co-workers question would be if those two sizes can be easily had from most suppliers. If they can easily be bought then people are using them and you'd need to consider them common sizes? You've got to give consideration to the word common also. I'm sure some smaller sizes would out-sell 6" pipe but does that mean 6" is less common? |
