I am interested in any specific guidelines or standards for wiring colors that may apply to automation equipment. I am in the process of developing automation equipment for in plant use. Years ago I worked on some equipment that came out of Germany and I recall that it followed a specific European color standard green/yellow for the ground. Is there such a standard for the U.S.?

Sincerely,

Jorge

There is no enforceable standard, but there are guidelines. NEMA has some, as does UL. But to be honest, not many people adhere to them. The generally accepted guidelines (from the old JIC standards that no longer exist) for control equipment wiring color codes are/were:

Red = AC control circuits, hot, derived from CPT or otherwise from within the panel in question.

White = Grounded / bonded neutral.

Black = Line potential (power) wiring, i.e. for motor starters' Line/Load in a panel etc.

Green = Ground.

Blue = DC.

Yellow or Orange = Foreign voltage source from another system.
