Division of Lengths, Composite Length Formulas and Calculators

The following formulas will determine spacing requirements for selected applications.

Where the edge distance is equal to the spacing formula:

Where the edge distance is equal to the spacing

P = l / ( n + 1 )
Eq. 1

Where:

l = Total length,
n = Number of holes or features

Where the edge distance is not equal to the spacing formula:

Where the edge distance is not equal to the spacing

p = [ l - ( a + b ) ] / ( n + 1 )
Eq. 2

Where:

l = total length
p = spacing
n = number of holes
a, b = edge distances

When subdividing into pieces spacing formula:

When subdividing into pieces formula

Number of pieces formula:

Z = l / ( ls + s )
Eq. 3

or

ls = l / Z - s
Eq. 3a

Remaining length formula:

lr = l - Z · ( ls + s )
Eq. 4

Where:

l = total length
p = spacing
Z = number of pieces
ls = piece length
lr = remaining piece length
s = saw cutting length (kerf)
