I'm mounting a large coupler to a hyd. motor that has a splined shaft. I had set screws machined into the coupler normal to the splines it covers to secure it. But now the manager wants to add a 1/4" keeper plate utilizing the two tapped holes on the end of the shaft to force the splines to ride up and wedge where the splines taper out on the shaft.

The assembly is subject to 300 rpm max 165 hp max 10500 ft-lb torque.
Is this good practice?
Is there another way to ensure the coupler does not back out or move?
No, but the coupler already has set screws ,one at 0° and at ~98° both are normal to a spline tooth.
What im trying to say is that, is it good for force-wedge it onto the base of the splined shaft?

Sure - it seems to work from the limited information I/we have. The challenge with internet advice is that it is not possible to fully understand a challenge with limited information.
For what its worth, a good deal of my white hair has come from depending on set screws for [U]ANYTHING IMPORTANT[/U]. Find another way.
