Does forging a part loaded in uniaxial compression make sense? I can understand forging a part that's under bending or transferring a load around a corner but if it's a straight compression isit worth the time and money? Does anyone have a handle on how to quantify the strength increase in 4340 0r 1045 from forging? And would that be along the grain? Transverse?

Forged parts are beneficial in terms of cyclic loading in any direction. The grain flow structure of a forging is "true" or aligned with the part geometry, where a casting is isotropic or lacking grain direction. In a part manufactured from cold or hot rolled materials the grain flow direction is broken and not aligned with the end-item part geometry.
