Using scales to monitor stock levels

Hi,

I am currently working for a company that deals with branded garments and we are looking to refine our process managing the quantity of garments that are unpacked. As it stands a team of individuals will manually count each garment out of a box which is obviously very labour intensive and subject to a lot of human error so we are looking to introduce using scales into our production flow and would like some advice on how best to implement this.

My thinking would be that a team member would check the quantity of garments in one box and weigh the box, they would also weigh 1x shirt from the box, this would set the tolerance... As an example:

SAMPLE BOX WEIGHT: 11.064 KG
SAMPLE SHIRT WEIGHT: 0.170 KG

Max Tolerance: 11.149 (11.064 + 50% of 0.170KG)
Min Tolerance: 10.979 [LEFT][COLOR=#222222][FONT=Verdana](11.064 + 50% of 0.170KG)

Then the idea would be to weigh each individual box and check if it falls within our tolerance, if it does we can assume the box holds the same quantity of garments. Is this the correct method of setting the required tolerance? If anyone has any advice on this it would be much appreciated if you could share.
