Fundamentals of Design Engineering?

[COLOR=#1A1A1B][FONT="]Ive worked as a design engineer for the last 2 and a half years.[/FONT][/COLOR]
[COLOR=#1A1A1B][FONT="]Having started looking for work elsewhere ive had my confidence knocked in a couple interviews.[/FONT][/COLOR]
[COLOR=#1A1A1B][FONT="]I got absolutely grilled for not being able to recognise the manufacturing method of various components. The interviewer even suggesting that I simply wasnt cut out to be a mechanical design engineer as a result.[/FONT][/COLOR]
[COLOR=#1A1A1B][FONT="]Now i get some of these methods should be second nature to people who want to get into design and manufacturing but without experience or exposure its kind of hard to develop those skills beyond surface level.[/FONT][/COLOR]
[COLOR=#1A1A1B][FONT="]What are the fundamentals of design engineering that a novice should understand and can learn without real world experience?[/FONT][/COLOR]
