Starting a career in Mechanical Engineering

Hi All,

I`m considering a career change from IT support (which iv been working in for the past 11 years or so) to Engineering, I just wanted to opinions on whether people felt an engineering degree is a requirement for employment these days or is the a magical training course I could attend? Only reason I ask is someone pointed me to the institute of mechanical engineers website who offer training, but im unsure if this is enough to secure you a career.
