    Deflection Experiment

    Hi,
I am mechanical engineering student second year and last week we did an experiment to find the deflection of cantilever and simply supported beams.
During the experiment, after every measurement we had to tap the frame slightly. Does anyone know why we had to do this?
If you could explain it to me I would be grateful.

Ok, let me guess. If your simply supported beam is mounted on a bearing, gimbal or other feature that may introduce friction during deflection... the tapping could be to ensure that the beam returns to the original static deflection state.

Eliminate the fixture hysteresis – in other words.

Do you have a picture of the beam deflection fixture?

Thank you very much for your response. This link below shows an apparatus similar to the one we used.

What do u mean by friction?between which surfaces?

Because the instructor told you to.

What was your instructor's answer when you asked him? Maybe to relieve any internal shifting of bolted joints. Maybe lots of things. Maybe its in the instructions with the equipment. Maybe he doesn't know. He just knows he was told to do it. The person that told you to do that is a much better source for your answer than we are.
