Bluetooth device that doesn't need to be plugged in?

I'm working with a team to design a product that will require the smallest possible Bluetooth device that has the ability to be in constant communication with a smartphone. This device will only need to be in communication with the phone at all times. The device has to be very small and cannot be physically plugged into anything else. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be used?

Bluetooth needs battery power at both ends, the phone and the Paired-device. Also that BT transmission back to the phone will require quite a lot of battery power as transmitting (Tx) radio signals is a power hungry operation. Receiving (Rx) is about 1/20th to 1/50th of the Tx power.

Depending on what you are trying to achieve, there may be better technology to do what you require. NFC?? RFID??

Search internet for "Bluetooth serial converter" or "Bluetooth digital converter".

There are many OEM solutions - though I don't know about size....

Not Bluetooth but food for thought:

I am using in an OEM project for an invisible dog fencing product.
