    Calculate Tension

    Can someone help calculate:

    1. Tension required to snap a steel cable of various diameter.
    2. Tension required to break a round bar of various diameter.
    3. Tension required to break a square bar.

    All using A36 steel with yield strength of 36ksi.

    Thanks.

    Stress = Force/Area

    or

    Force = Stress x Area

    You need to determine the yield properties of the selected materials, area in tension and then you can estimate failure.

    Here is a typical stress - strain curve.
