    Problem with Chlorine

    Hello friends,

I would like to present an environmental problem and hope that we can discuss and manner to solve it,
As everyone know, in the water treatment plants, they are usually using the Chlorine gas as a disinfectant. This gas supplied to the water treatment plant as a 1.5 Ton bottle, sometimes and when a leakage in the chlorine bottles were happen the water treatment staff were mistakenly treat the leakage by burying the defected chlorine bottle underground ... now, and after many years there are approximately 80 chlorine bottle buried underground, the metal cage of the bottle have been corroded and we have 80 chlorine bottle ready to release the chlorine gas at any moment ... the situation now is similar to someone have a cemetery of chlorine bottle filled with chlorine gas.

What is the best process to handle these bottles to a safe place without releasing the gas from bottles?
there is an idea of making a water basin in the region where bottles have been buried, and starting picking up the bottles one by one, if a release happen, then the gas will be mixed with the water and will create an acid, this is better than releasing the gas to the air which considered a very dangerous poison gas ... note that the surrounding community just 300m away from the chlorine cemetery.

    Welcome to EE!

I have to wonder what country you're in.. I have no experience in removing hazardous materials like chlorine. In the USA we have specialty organizations that can be hired to remove the materials. This is what I would recommend you do - is hire professionals already experienced is this operation.
