    Screw Jack Design

    Hi all,

What is the best thread profile for a screw jack and is there an optimum combination of pitch and TPI for applying maximum force without grinding the threads too thin? IOW, what's the best trade-off between maintaing the robustness of the jack whilst making the gearing as powerful as possible? Also, what would be a suitable grade of steel to make the worm and nut out of?

    Many thanks.

Why are you designing one when there are so many proven and tested designs available commercially? The specific answers to your questions depend on the specific requirements of the application.

I would start by looking at ACME threads but like jboggs said there are many products already designed, tested and ready for install.
