    Profile tolerance questions

    Hello all,

we are debating on how to calculate profile tolerance. we have a call out with .004 profile of a surface. In general terms we would say this is a bi-lateral tolerance that needs to be 1 inch from datum A. It is measuring 1.0018. The deviation is .0018. The debate is that some say the deviation needs to be doubled to calculate the profile. so doubled it would be .0036 and would check within tolerance. Some say it does not need to be doubled and the profile is .0018.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

By default, Profile tolerances are bi-lateral equal about the true surface profile. For you specification - .004 Profile of Surface tolerance boundaries are +/- .002 offset perpendicular to the surface.

So, nominal surface location plus .002, your as-measured surface is manufactured within tolerance.

We all agree we have a good part and it is within tolerance. Our debate is over how to report it. Do we report .0018 or .0036?

    .0036 of .004 allowed.
