Natural frequency relationship with Degree of freedom

How exactly the Natural frequency of the system relates to the Degrees of freedom?
Since i studied that no of natural frequencies of a system is equal to its no of Degree of freedom.

Degrees of freedom relate to the number of directions a mass can move in once set in motion. A spring moving up and down would have a single degree of freedom (simple harmonic motion), a boat in the sea would have six degrees of freedom eg: up and down left and right, so on and so forth. This is a simple explanation however, the more complex the system, the more DOFs (possibly) and the more complex the analysis can get.
