Compressive strength of a square tube.

I would like to find out how much force I can apply to the ends of a steel square tube before it starts to yield. 3" Sq x 1/4" Wall. Is there a formula for this or is using the materials yield and cross sectional square inches something will work. Material is a500. I can't seem to find a simple formula for this. Can someone help me with this?

Your description on the loading is vague "how much force I can apply to the ends of a steel square tube". Bending, compression, column loading, uniform, etc..

A free body diagram would help.

Please be aware that I doubt the formula is "simple".

Kelly, Its a rack system. The tube will be under compression similar to column loading I guess. Max load on each tube would be 7,500 lbs Vertically. Thanks for any help.rack.JPG

On this webpage, towards the bottom there are links to Column Loading calculators, books, etc.

Even more on this web page, use "ctrl F" to search the webpage for "column"

The area moment of Inertia for your section geometry can be determined here:

You could also model your frame with this "Statics 2D Modeler and Structural Loads Calculator " tool and simulate the deflections and resultant loading.
