I would like to find out how much force I can apply to the ends of a steel square tube before it starts to yield. 3" Sq x 1/4" Wall. Is there a formula for this or is using the materials yield and cross sectional square inches something will work. Material is a500. I can't seem to find a simple formula for this. Can someone help me with this?

2. Your description on the loading is vague "how much force I can apply to the ends of a steel square tube". Bending, compression, column loading, uniform, etc..

A free body diagram would help.

Please be aware that I doubt the formula is "simple".

3. Kelly, Its a rack system. The tube will be under compression similar to column loading I guess. Max load on each tube would be 7,500 lbs Vertically. Thanks for any help.rack.JPG
