    Counterweight

    Hello everyone,

I am a student so please forgive me if this is a remedial question. Can someone please explain the concept or point me in the right direction to gain understanding behind the physics in the drawing bellow so I can apply this and recreate this using steel plates? If I didn't fully explain my question please tell me what information I left out so I can help you help me.

Equilibrium? I take it you want to apply a force to an orange on a doormat and you want to know how many oranges on another doormat it would take to resist the initial force, correct?

Not quite. I want to create a stand which will hold bars in position and move up and down vertically depending upon the space between the bars inserted. So when the top bar goes in it only allows the bottom to go to a specific spot or vice versa. However, I don't just want the solution I want to fully understand the concept. Here's a better picture (rotate 90 degrees clockwise).

I don't see what part applies. Can you give a specific time frame?
