Description: Bearings are machine elements created to help reduce friction between two moving parts by providing a surface that one faction can roll on as opposed to sliding over. They are constructed using smooth rollers (call them metal balls) and smooth inner as well as outer surfaces. The rollers are the load carriers for the device using the bearing by allowing them to spin freely. The bearings can be classified into two main categories.

(1) The ball bearings: These are the popular options in the market today. They are designed using chrome steel, stainless steel, or ceramic. The ball bearings utilize balls to separate the inner race and bearing. Depending on their size, the ball bearings have a lower load capacity compared to other types of bearings. However, they are used in almost anything that has some motion. The ball bearings are designed for light to general machine applications that require low friction and high speed. From industrial motors to simpler devices such as skating equipment, the moving parts are likely to have some bearings in one of their sections. The ball bearings are preferred because of their ease of use since they only need a small contact area. The main types of ball bearings include the Deep Groove bearings, Angular Contact Bearings, Self-Aligning bearings, and Thrust ball bearings.

(2) Roller bearings: This group of bearings is the preferred option when people are using applications like the conveyor belts. They are considered better than the ball bearings because they can handle larger loads. The main types of roller bearings include; Spherical bearings, Tapered bearings, Cylindrical bearings, and Needle bearings. To achieve optimal performance with bearings, they require periodic maintenance to prevent premature failure. For example, you need to grease them regularly using the right lubricants. The bearing life can be extended when the bearings are kept clean and lubricated properly.
