To fuel your fire. Materials have stress in them simply from heat changes or other things. We stress relieve metals to allow the to better take the shape their stresses are wanting them to. If you machine some steels the steel will take on a new shape because we have removed some of the stressed material and allow other areas to act on the remaining mass.
