Ring gasket wall thickness

This question is related to flanges used in oil industry. If anyone working in this area please clarify.
Why the wall thickness of ring gaskets [used between two flanges] is thinner than the wall thickness of pipe although ring gasket also will be under same internal pressure as pipe. Infact some times the material strength of ring gasket is less than pipe body material!
Thanks.
