The purpose of the flange is to support the ring gasket. That's why ring gasket is thinner as compare to the flange. Second thing is that, the material of the ring gasket is always softer than the flange so that any case of leakage.
the surface of the ring should be damaged instead of flange surface. As it is very costly to change the flange.
