Recommended safety factor for surgery jig? | |||

i designing a surgery jig in my final year project, any idea on what factor of safety that i should use in the design for stress analysis? |

The answer to that question depends upon the potential results of failure. Life threatening, or just bothersome? Just because its for surgery doesn't necessarily mean that failure is catastrophic. |

err..the jig that i design is use in total knee replacement surgery, main function is to guide the bone cutting saw blade to cut the femoral bone into the required shape. |

OK, you've got me scared. I would not guess at the proper safety factor for that device. I will let others jump on that one. |

I'd say talk to a surgon about his feelings. This jig/fixture needs to have methods for the surgon to set guides, depth stops, and/or protractors according to some extablished criteria derived from the alignment, size, and shape of the leg being cut. As far as safety, if you are going to use it on me, you had better have it designed to where there is NO WAY you can cut incorrectly as long as the fixture is applied correctly. I would want tripple redundant prevention from being applied incorrectly. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |
