Does anyone have any feelings on whether a PE is valuble for a mechanical engineer in a manufacturing facility? It was one of my goals to get my license, but There arent any PEs in my office. I think I still want to get it, because I busted my butt to learn as much as I could in college and my career so far, but Does it do me any good if im not working under a PE's supervision? Sorry for so many questions.

Thanks,
Adam

Ditto to all the other comments. I have worked in or around manufacturing environments for most of my career, and a PE has never been a requirement for any of their employees, but the fact that I have it stands out to everyone that reads my resume, because they aren't used to seeing it. They take it as a sign that you are serious about your calling.

Plus - you never know where your career will take you. I ended up spending almost 20 years in various consulting roles. In most states, it is illegal to offer "engineering services" of any type on the open market without having a PE license. Some enforce that rule very strictly.

As far as your training requirements, check with your local state board. Each has their own rules and interpretations.

Also, Randy was right when he said do it now! Later is never easier.

An anecdote - many folks in manufacturing don't even know what a PE is. When I got mine, the plant Maintenance Manager who sat at the desk next to me said, "P.E. P.E. What does that stand for? 'Poor Excuse'?" Keeps you humble.

Hi Adam,

I'm not sure what your company manufactures....doesn't sound like P.E. is a requirement. You need to separate your education from your present position.

Look at this scenerio...Being a P.E. is an added bonus kinda like a PhD. If your company laid you off..and you saw a job...and you REALLY liked it...but they require a PE and you didn't have it because you didn't think you needed it in your job. You'd kick yourself.

You just gotta do it.
