Is there a co-relationship between Surface roughness and linear tolerancing. eg. Can I achieve a surface finishing of Ra 0.4 with an IT7 tolerancing range.

Surface roughness is the measure of the finer regulates in the surface texture. The roughness is the result of the manufacturing process used to create the surface.

An IT7 tolerance grade will define the size (min and max) or distance with respect to a reference feature.

Roughness is a different measure or requirement with respect to IT tolerance grades or similar and should be specified as a separate component to size and distance.

Declaring that surface roughness is included within size tolerance is actually a common miss-assumption. Some folks assume that if one specifies a tight (small) or geometric tolerance that the surface will have a smaller or finer roughness. This is not always true as one can have a flatness of .001" and a surface roughness 63 or greater.

Roughness Ra, RMS or CLA are always contained within size variations on an individual surface...
