As an assignment I am designing a gearbox for a 1000kW wind turbine, with planetary gears. How could I fix the ring gear to the gearbox?

I've heard of brake bands.. but would these be too weak for this application?
Another option considered was casting the ring gear with the gearbox case, but I couldn't replace it easily if a tooth broke?

Thanks =)

Bolts and a pin or two jump right out at me on this one, but without seeing what your up to it's just a wild guess. You're correct in wanting to keep the gear a seperate component if you want this to be something other than a "throw away" rig. You also need to keep in mind what will be "do-able" far as machining and heat treating etc. goes. Anytime you can buy a component off the shelf you'll be ahead. Costs a lot more to whip up a single gear than a jillion. For alignment a c'bore or boss for the ring to sit in would be nice if the design would permit it.

Good Luck...!
