As an assignment I am designing a gearbox for a 1000kW wind turbine, with planetary gears. How could I fix the ring gear to the gearbox? I've heard of brake bands.. but would these be too weak for this application?
Thanks =)

Bolts and a pin or two jump right out at me on this one, but without seeing what your up to it's just a wild guess. You're correct in wanting to keep the gear a seperate component if you want this to be something other than a "throw away" rig. You also need to keep in mind what will be "do-able" far as machining and heat treating etc. goes. Anytime you can buy a component off the shelf you'll be ahead. Costs a lot more to whip up a single gear than a jillion. For alignment a c'bore or boss for the ring to sit in would be nice if the design would permit it. Good Luck...!
