I'm putting in a drive on my property.  Unfortunately, there are two small area of wetlands where a bridge must be built.  One is 16' the other is 24'.  I'm wondering what size I-Beam's should be used and how many.

Thanks, Mr Ranger

Mr. Ranger,

A little more information would be needed to properly size your bridge beams.  Like, what are you planning on taking across these bridges (cars, trucks, tractors semi trucks and trailors) and what kind of soil is around the areas in which you plan on placing the abutments.  Also, what kind of decking are you plannning on using?  Concrete, steel, grating, or even wood.

For this type of question, I would say that a local engineer with the highway department or someone like that would be your best bet.

But, if you had all the information that is listed above I am sure that a lot of folks on this forum could answer your questions.  Or you could even use some of the formulas, on the site to get the information yourself.

Hope this helps, a little.

jcmcgraw, Thanks.  Just trying to gain access to a lake and want bridge to support a car or pickup.  The soil on each side has been filled with good packing dirt and gravel.  I am planning on pouring concrete on each side to set beams on and topping with wood.

Thanks, Mr Ranger

Mr Ranger,  I ran some quick (and I mean very quick) calculations on this yesterday, I assumend concrete abutments and used 5000 lbs. and only used 2 contact areas instead of 4 like a car or truck would actually have.  From my quick run through you could probably use, as small as a W10 beams.  But the deflection in this small of beam would be pretty high, like in the neighborhood of 1 1/2".

If it was me, I would think about using a W12x16 but would probably use a W14x22.  This is over kill and this is for the 24' span.  So they should be ok for the 16'.

Hope this helps.
