Can anyone help me figure this design question out, it would be much appreciated and it will help me out a lot as I am trying to study for a final and this is a study question. Thanks here is the question: Question: Design a 3' height structure, a tripod, to take a 600lb load. Identify the loads at each member (all six members), determine the cross section, and select material. The picture given is that of a car jack (a tripod) with the load coming from the top and there are 6 members, three rods coming from where the load is and all three going into the ground then there are three rods connecting those other three at the base. If anyone can help me and work out this problem I would appreciate it. Thanks

You should have the learned skills to do that problem. If not, you need to study why you didn't, getting help with the problem will not impart the knowledge you should have learned and would not help you in the future. If you can not do the problem it should be a wake up call to seek a tutor or some kind of learning help. This indicates you have a lack of the skills you should have acquired. There is nothing wrong with someone here helping, but the bigger problem is that you don't know how to approach the problem. I'm sorry if I sound harsh, but you need someone to be honest with you. It is more important to be able to figure this out than to simply pass the test.

To call up an old adage, (I'm an old fart, you get this for free) You don't need someone to give you corn to eat. You need someone teach you how to grow corn. Then you can eat today AND tommorow.

I'm not just speaking to you but also to the many students that write in looking for short cuts to the answers to tests and problems, getting the answer may help you pass the test, but will cause you to fail in the test of holding down a job, "so you can eat". Yes, sometimes a little help from here can be a push in the right direction, but you are asking how to do a standard basic problem.

Not being able to solve the sample test problem should send you back to the text to find out what you missed so you can study that concept again.

Good luck, I know you will find the areas in the text and lab books and do just fine, study!
