Shaft Deflection VS Shape

My argument is that a round shaft with flats machined on the sides deflects less than the original round shaft. I would like to find data to either support or dispute this premise.

Zekeman is right. Look up "section modulus" You can calculate it in different ways depending on your cross sectional geometry. Also look up "beam deflection formuluas" This should help you out.

Impossible, since the deflection is inversely proportonal to the section moment of inertia, it follows that if you shave off any material anywhere, that inertia is reduced and the deflection, consequently increased for the same loading.
