very thin foil or mylar?

Hi,

I have an engineering project that requires the use of a very thin material as a spacer -- how thin exactly has yet to be determined (it's a work in progress), but I know for a fact thinner than .003 inch.

I've been on the lookout for thinner materials readily available in commercial stores but have yet to come up with something that is both thin enough and will not melt at temps around 145 faranheit.

The mad scientist in me has been hawking all sorts of household materials and believe it or not the most successful material to date is the plastic from an envelope window

Any advice on what material I should look for, and a vendor to get it from?

Gold/Silver leaf is too thin and expensive, incidentally.

In a pinch I have taken apart a feeler gage set and used them has shims(the flat type). They typically go down to .002". You can buy a cheap set from Northern tool or Harbor Freight Tools...

Feeler gage is a great suggestion, I have a craftsman set that goes down to .0002".

Search for "shim stock" on google. There was a website called smallparts which sold 6" × 18" Sheet .001" thick for $2.85.

Another site called solarstop, which sells plastic shim stock .0005" for $3.20 5-9 with a minimum purchase of $50.

The Enco catalogue, I believe, had a stainless steel foil used to wrap parts when heat treating them, I don't remember the thickness.
