I'm thinking of using one of these to vary the ratios on pulleys for aweight lifting device. Is it possible to buy a small version of one of these off the shelf or the components to make one? Alternatively is there another easy/quick way of changing the force applied to a pulley system to lift a weight? (I'm assuming that adding/removing pulleys is a bit time consuming).

Thanks.

Have you considered figuring a way to use the recently available automatic bicycle transmissions?
