I need help on figuring out how much weight a 16" @ 50# wide flange beam will support. I currently have these beams in an industrial building that we use for fabrication of steel products. They are being used for the crane ways. On top of the beams there is a 10" channel as a cap then the rail for the crane to run on. There is currently a single bridge 10 ton crane on it and I want to hang a 10 ton double bridge crane with it. The span of the beams is 25'with each end of the beam sitting on supports about 2 1/2" overlapping each end. If possible please supply the figures for the formula to get to the answer.

I recommend you consult a local structural Professional Engineer for this one. Life and limb are at stake and the forces are great. The raw numbers could be run in this forum, but missing small details could spell disaster. I've done several craneways and there are specific issues to be dealt with.

From what you have stated (and a quick back of the envelope calc), it doesn't look like a good idea. If you talk to a good structural P.E., however, he may be able to make it work with only minor modifications.

I am having a little trouble visualizing your set up. Do you think you could provide a sketch?

I can provide a cad drawing of what I am talking about. It would just take me drawing the cranes up on the beams. Would a 3D model help?

You're foolish to build this without a qualified engineering to design it. PERIOD.
