I think I can remember reading somewhere that a coiled spring pins have more strengh in shear than a solid dowel pin. Can anyone confirm this. Thank you for any help given

For identical sizes (diameter) and material, no. There will be less material cross section (area) to resist the shear load.

The advantage of a hollow cylinder over a solid, is that it will weight much less.
