We have a design concept which would use a film of teflon about 0.005" thick, but it would be a very large foot print, about three feet long, and have several bends in it. This makes conventional "Teflon Tape" not an option. We are thinking of molding it into shape. Does anyone know if this is possible? Or what the process of making Teflon tape is. We currently sinter teflon, but the footprint would be too large to sinter this.

Conventional tape has a woven fiberglass reinforcement, making it difficult to conform to a multi dimensional curve such as a sphere. Teflon tape is also available as an unsupported film. Cast films will have the most amorphous (non oriented) molecular structure. These films are often sold to aerospace composite manufacturers . They are commonly called "tool coat"
To make these films bondable (able to be glued) is also simple. One surface can be etched with sodium ammonia or sodium napthalene. This removes fluorine atoms from the surface of the teflon to defeat the non-stick property on that side. there are only two companies who etch PTFE in the US.. Acton Technology and Porter Chemical. |

My experience with teflon at .005" thick is that you'll find that it may just curl up on you...I could never get teflon stampings to lay flat. Marky I'll kindly pay you Tuesday..for a hamburger today....Whimpy |

I agree hardily with Kelly, I'd check into having or becoming able to Teflon coat the part. ... plus.. I have found sheets of Teflon tape tend to turn loose of about every kind of glue I ever tried... that is Teflon's job. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |
