Do you mean that the gasket is formed intoa spiral like a spring? or that the gasket has a spiral component included within the cross-section?

are composed of a metallic continuous stripe with a special shaped profile, coupled with a continuous
filing stripe (Asbestos, PTFE, Grafoil, Ceramic etc) evenly wound in concentric spiral under constant stress. The Spiral Wound Gaskets are reinforced on the inner and outer diametre by winding of several electrically welded spiral metal only.

I have never heard of a spiral wound gasket material used to seal for this application. My guess is that you are reffering to the retainer/shape spring used within many high pressure/temperature flange gaskets.

The material is probably Stainless Steel, at least 316 or 316L. If your are purchasing a gasket for this application - consult the distributor or manufacturer. If you are designing a new flange gasket - buy one and have a material analysis done on it.

Contace a reputable spiral wound gasket manufacturer with your design parameters and have them advise accordingly. You already know of Flexitallic, also consider Lamons, and Garlock for spiral wound applications.
